Add a YouTube music video to your smart link

Set up thumbnail-first music video playback, choose your framing and understand how video can help fans stay engaged.

Anyone can read this guide. The tool it covers is part of the Studio and Lifetime plans.

  1. 1

    Before you start

    • YouTube Video Hero is included with Studio and Lifetime, not Free or Pro. It works in both new smart links and existing links.
    • Upload a video you own or have permission to use to YouTube. Use Public or Unlisted visibility and allow embedding. Private, age-restricted, region-blocked or embedding-disabled videos may not play.
    • Set your thumbnail in YouTube Studio. MelodyLane uses that thumbnail automatically; YouTube may take time to refresh a changed image.
  2. 2

    Add your video

    • Go to Dashboard → Smart Links. Create a link or open an existing one, then open Studio Tools → YouTube Video Hero.
    • Switch on Show YouTube video and paste a YouTube watch, youtu.be or Shorts link.
    • Save your existing link, or finish publishing the new link. Keep your album cover uploaded: it remains the image in chat/social sharing previews and the source for artwork-matched colors.
  3. 3

    Choose the frame

    • 16:9 Widescreen is the default. Choose 9:16 Vertical for portrait videos or Shorts, or 1:1 Square in Video framing.
    • The choice controls the frame, not the original video. YouTube may add bars when the video and frame have different shapes.
    • Check the editor preview and your public link on a phone and computer. Streaming buttons remain below the video.

Tip: Use the frame that matches your original video. Tall videos can push listening buttons farther down the page.

  4. 4

    What fans see and privacy

    • Fans see your YouTube thumbnail with a play button, not an empty player. If the highest-resolution thumbnail is unavailable, we try a lower-resolution version, then your cover artwork.
    • The player loads from youtube-nocookie.com only after a fan taps Play. The thumbnail itself is fetched from YouTube and reveals connection information to its image servers.
    • Playing allows YouTube to process playback information under its policies; privacy-enhanced mode is not a guarantee of zero data collection. Sound does not start when the page opens.
    • If playback is blocked, fans can use Watch on YouTube or your streaming buttons. No YouTube API key is needed.
  5. 5

Why a music video can help retention

    • A strong visual hook gives new listeners context: your performance, story and identity can give them a reason to stay and explore the release.
    • Use a clear thumbnail and an engaging opening. Keep streaming buttons and your fan signup easy to find; watching should not become an obstacle to listening.
    • Video may help engagement, but it does not guarantee longer visits, streams, sales or signups. Compare your visits, service taps and signups before and after adding a video, accounting for traffic-source changes.
    • MelodyLane Insights does not currently report YouTube watch time or video completion. Use YouTube Analytics for those measurements; a service tap is not a confirmed stream.

Tip: Try a performance, official music video or lyric video that supports the release you are promoting.

    Troubleshooting and turning it off

    • Check that the video plays while signed out on YouTube and that embedding is allowed. Deleted or private videos can still have a cached thumbnail.
    • A missing thumbnail falls back to your cover; a blocked video cannot be fixed by changing its frame. Use Watch on YouTube where available or choose another video.
    • Switch off Show YouTube video to restore the cover. Your video settings stay saved. If Studio access lapses, the public page returns to artwork without deleting those settings.
